 Hattiesburg Zoo hosts Earth Day and Birdfest Activities

The following is a news release from The Hattiesburg Zoo:

The Hattiesburg Zoo is pleased to offer a variety of special activities for Zoo guests on April 20 in honor of Earth Day.

Located throughout the Zoo, the EdZOOcation Department will have four interactive stations setup for guests to enjoy while taking a deeper look into conservation and animal care. Set up from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., these stations will include:

The Lamar County 4-H Horse Club Riding Event

The Lamar County 4-H Horse Club Riding Event

The Lamar County 4-H Horse Club, Turners -n- Burners will host a horse riding event, petting zoo, and games for physically and mentally challenged folks of all ages, March 16 at the Lamar County Multipurpose Center in Purvis from 10 a.m. -noon.

44 contestants have confirmed thus far and all are welcomed! Admission is free. For more information call Brandi or Tammy Korbe at 601-310-0790.

The Hattiesburg Zoo is pleased to offer a daily schedule of special activities planned during Spring Break. Each day, during March 12-16, guests of the Zoo can take advantage of up close and personal educational experiences with the animals, as well as themed meal options at the Zoo’s concession stand.

Bel-Aire opens One-of-a Kind Science Lab with help of GCRL and MDMR

Thanks to a $5,500 grant from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and a donation of approximately $10,000 worth of equipment from the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s Marine Education Center, Bel-Aire Elementary School in Gulfport is opening the only elementary science laboratory of its kind in the Harrison County School District.

The MEC’s donation included tanks of various sizes (including touch-tanks) and complete filtration system set-ups for all the tanks. Also, a myriad of creatures were donated.

The fun will begin at 5:30 p.m. as guests enjoy a memorable Valentine’s Day event complete with a Valentine-themed meal, an Animal Show exploring love in the Animal Kingdom, a train ride through the “Tunnel of Love” and so much more!

PWAS intro to Bird Watching

The Pinewoods Audubon Society is sponsoring/presenting an Introduction to Bird Watching Class at the Oak Grove Public Library at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays:

  • Jan. 12
  • Jan. 26
  • Feb. 02
  • Feb. 09 

five part class. 

The fifth meeting will be on Feb. 16 at the PWAS Window Watch (Part of the Great Backyard Bird Count). 

This class will be a basic introduction to birding, and is offered to the general public for free, though registration is required.
