Southern Miss plants five mature oak trees on Hattiesburg campus

Three months after an F-4 tornado tore through the front part of campus The University of Southern Mississippi has taken a huge step in restoring the damaged landscape.

On May 7 five mature oak trees were planted to kickoff the first phase of a Campus Beautification Plan. The live oaks, measuring 40-feet high by 40-feet wide, were supplied by Florida-based grower, The Magnolia Company. These trees are root-pruned and grown specifically for transplantation. Each one is between 25-30 years old.

Southern Miss Student completes Internship with American Greetings

University of Southern Mississippi senior Eileen Dominguez, a tourism management major from Honduras, spent the majority of her spring semester as an intern with American Greetings Corp.

The internship program, launched in 2012, actively recruits business and management students from across the country. Interns are taught how to run a successful sales territory while having the opportunity to learn more about managing employees, hiring and recruiting, planning/organization, selling/marketing and the implementation of corporate programs.

WCU students receive top honors at convocation

The following is a news release from William Carey University:

William Carey University students Courtney Lauren Daley of Carson and Patrick Earley of Raceland, La., received the Jenkins - Chastain Citizenship Award at WCU’s 2013 Honors Convocation on April 24. Dr. Tommy King, president of WCU, presented the awards to Daley and Earley. The highest honor given by the university, it recognizes students who have made the most significant contributions to student and campus life in exemplifying those qualities of citizenship upheld by the university.

Southern Miss Senior from Mandeville Receives Scholar-Athlete Award

Caitlin Leumas of Mandeville, La., a senior in the School of Human Performance and Recreation at The University of Southern Mississippi, received the C.L. Dews, Jr. Distinguished Student Scholar Athlete Award based on her athletic, academic and leadership abilities.

The award is given annually to one male and one female senior athlete. Recipients are selected based on academics, leadership, athletic ability and performance.
