On Nov. 17, William Carey University held a dedication ceremony for its newest addition to campus – a 600-pound bronze statue of the “Father of Modern Missions” and the institution’s namesake, William Carey. The seven foot statue, created by sculptor Ben Watts of Columbia, is titled “Carey Turns to the World.”

There's a new crown in town

On Nov. 5, Southern Miss student and Hattiesburg native Myverick Garcia won the Miss Mississippi USA title at the event held in Tunica at the Harrah's Events Center.

Last year, Garcia received 1st runner up in the competition. This year, however, she beat out 28 women for the coveted title that earned her a spot in the 2012 Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas next June.

High School Drama Festival to attract hundreds to Southern Miss Campus

Students and teachers representing 16 high schools from the southern region of the state will converge on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus Dec. 2-3 for the South Mississippi High School Drama Festival.

The participants will perform plays ranging from Luigi Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author,” a play that presents Pirandello's views about the isolation of the individual from society and from himself, to “Be Careful What You Ask For,” a romantic comedy of wishes gone amiss.

Southern Miss doctoral student receives Smithsonian Fellowship

University of Southern Mississippi doctoral student Emily Cohen has parlayed her curiosity about nature and affinity for birds into a research fellowship with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, Migratory Bird Center in Washington, D.C.

Cohen, who is scheduled to graduate in December, will begin her post-doctoral Smithsonian fellowship in January. As part of the two-year research position, Cohen will participate in the Migratory Connectivity Project, an initiative to conduct comprehensive life cycle analyses for migratory wildlife.

Donated books will brighten a child’s day as the Friends of University Libraries at The University of Southern Mississippi launches its first “Give a Child a New Book Day.” Assisting with the campaign are Deanna Favre, 2011 Honorary Chair, and Rev. Tommy Conway, 2011 Honorary Co-Chair, president of the Friends of University Libraries and pastor at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Hattiesburg.

The University of Southern Mississippi fall theatre season concludes with an upbeat, high energy musical when “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is presented in conjunction with the School of Music at the Martha R. Tatum Theatre main stage, beginning Nov. 17.

“Spelling Bee,” the 2005 winner of a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, includes a storyline featuring six youth competing for the spelling championship of a lifetime while blending comedy with song to become an audience favorite.
