Southern Miss Participates in National Therapeutic Recreation Month

The Southern Miss School of Human Performance and Recreation’s therapeutic recreation program received a proclamation from Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree on Feb. 7 declaring February 2012 as Therapeutic Recreation Month in Hattiesburg, Miss.

This began a month-long celebration at Southern Miss of the growing profession, of which faculty and students alike are spreading the word about therapeutic recreation and its benefit to the health care community.

The Main Street UMC Preschool held its annual Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras parade on Feb. 21. The three and four year old classes-- armed with beads and wearing masks-- paraded down the hall to the two and one year old classes.

Southern Miss School of Music to Present Musical Dramas Feb. 28, March 1

Love, jealousy, betrayal and murder are just a few of the themes that will be on full display when The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music presents the short operas “Cavalleria Rusticana”and “Il Tabarro” Feb. 28 and March 1 at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

These fully staged productions feature singers of the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company and the Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Dr. Jay Dean. Unlike most singular performances, both of these operas will be staged on the same evening each night.

Southern Miss Athletic Director Search Committee Begins Work

A 21-member search committee began work on Monday toward identifying the University of Southern Mississippi’s next athletic director.

The committee is charged with assisting University President Dr. Martha Saunders with the selection of the next athletic director, and is chaired by Spencer Adams, president of the University’s Athletic Foundation, and Chad Driskell, Saunders’ executive assistant for External Affairs.

Southern Quarterly Edition Honors Black History Month

The current issue of the Southern Quarterly, titled "African American Identities," celebrates Black History Month. Edited by University of Southern Mississippi Distinguished Professor of English Philip Kolin, it contains scholarly essays on black literature, art, music as well as original poetry by four distinguished black authors plus a bibliography on black architects.
