WCU holds summer institute for math teachers | Schools

William Carey University’s mathematics department is hosting a summer institute for middle school mathematics teachers in the Pine Belt and Gulf Coast area from May 31 until June 27. The institute, known as “Integrating the Common Core and Middle School Mathematics: An Institute for Teachers in Grades 6-8,” is directed by Dr. Leslie Horton (far left, back row), assistant professor of mathematics at WCU. Horton is assisted by Dr. Susan Whitcomb (fourth from the right, front row), assistant professor of education at WCU and Beth McShea (far right), a secondary mathematics teacher in the Pine Belt area. The institute is designed to assist “in need” teachers, or teachers who are either new to the profession or are teaching math but are not certified in it. There were 18 participants selected for the program.
