Annual post office "Stamp out Hunger" food drive Saturday

The National Association of Letter carriers 21st Annual "Stamp out Hunger" food drive is scheduled for Saturday.

Letter carriers throughout the Pine Belt will collect non-perishable food items left at mailboxes. Residents wanting to contribute should leave the items in a bag next to the mailbox by 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Locally the items will go to support Christian Services, The Salvation Army of Hattiesburg, and the Edwards Street Fellowship Center.

Monday morning fire guts Hattiesburg night club

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- An early morning fire caused extensive damage to the Frat House night club on 37th Ave. The fire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. Hattiesburg fire investigators remain on the scene looking into the cause.

Pine Belt residents run for breath to help cystic fibrosis

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Dozens of Pine Belt residents spent their afternoon running for a good cause on Sunday.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Pre-medical Associations held their first annual Running for Breath 5k and 1 mile run/walk. 

Residents came out to Longleaf Trace and ran for cystic fibrosis.

USM pre-med student David Kahler, used his friend as a inspiration to start the event, and thanks to all the support, the Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Jackson will continue being funded for research.

Mississippi coalition holds forum to discuss benefits of Medicaid

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- A community forum was held on Saturday at The University of Mississippi to discuss the health and economic impact of expanding Medicaid in Mississippi.

The Mississippi Health Care Access Coalition hosted the forum and spoke to a few residents on the benefits of expanding Medicaid.

The coalition believes that under the Affordable Care Act, Mississippi has an opportunity to increase access to health insurance, invest in working families and create thousands of new jobs for Mississippians.

Teen pregnancy prevention program holds family-friendly event

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- A teen pregnancy prevention program held a family-friendly event on Saturday at Hattiesburg’s Chain Park.

May is recognized as National Teen Pregnancy Prevention month and on Saturday the Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc. presented a day filled with health booths, games, food and music.

As a state that leads in teen pregnancy, the program wants to be able to provide youth with helpful resources and lower the rate in teen pregnancy.

"Art for Heart" raises money to fight heart disease

Organizers of the American Heart Association's Art for Heart event hoped to raise $200,000.

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Dozens of Hattiesburg-area art lovers gathered at the Train Depot Friday night to help fight heart disease by attending an annual fund raising event.

The Art for Heart gala included both live and silent auction items.

All proceeds went to the American Heart Association.

Organizers hoped to raise about $200,000.

The American Heart Association also honored retired Hattiesburg businessman Brad Bryan and the late Doc and Carolyn Roberts for their support.

Southern Miss student in critical condition after gunshot wound

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- A University of Southern Mississippi student from Brandon remains in critical yet stable condition Friday after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh while sitting in his vehicle on campus.

Blake Ballard, 22, was found on the pavement outside his jeep Thursday afternoon on the service road adjacent to the Ogletree Alumni House.

The junior was rushed to Forrest General Hospital for treatment.
