HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- A Hattiesburg museum continued its commemoration of Black History Month by hosting a special presentation detailing the life of former secretary of state Colin Powell. The African-American Military History Museum aired a documentary on Powell's life Saturday morning.
It was part of a month-long tribute to veterans of the Gulf War. Powell was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during that conflict.
Next Saturday, a local Gulf War veteran will speak about his experiences. And the following weekend, the special programs conclude with a presenation from another Gulf War vet.
"It's very important that we hear from these veterans, because they get to tell us their side of the story, what it was like for them when they went, what it was like when they came home," said LaToya Norman, general manager of the African-American Military History Museum.
Also, a long-awaited restoration of the back wall of the historic museum has begun. It should be finished in a couple of weeks.
