HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- A new fund raising initiative is underway at Southern Miss to benefit the School of Mass Communication and Journalism.
It's called the "Campaign for Mass Comm" and the goal is to raise money to furnish and equip the school's new home, the newly-renovated historic College Hall.
The campaign will also create new endowments for scholarships and professorships in the school.
The campaign was kicked off during a luncheon at the Trent Lott Center Friday.
"We want to be considered one of the best programs in the country and definitely one of the best five in the southeast and I think we're not far from that," said Chris Campbell, Ph.D., director of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism at USM. "But, what we need, we need resources and that's what we're trying to do with this campaign," he said.
"There are people in newspapers, people in recording, people in all sorts of mass media from The University of Southern Mississippi...it has a rich heritage and we don't want to see that diminish," said Jim Cameron, general manager of WDAM-TV and a graduate of Southern Miss.
Currently, the School of Mass Communication and Journalism has about 600 students.
