Book on Hitler assassination attempt translated by USM professor | News
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A book which details the life of a German carpenter who attempted to assassinate Adolph Hitler has been translated into English by a longtime professor of German at Southern Miss.
Bombing Hitler, translated by Dr. William Odom, tells the story of Georg Elser, who tried to kill Hitler in 1939 by setting off two time bombs during one of his speeches in Munich. The bombs detonated properly, but Hitler had ended his speech early.
Elser was captured and eventually died at the Dachau concentration camp in 1945.
"Elser simply demonstrated that you can be an individualist, that you can stick to your ideas and your ideals and act on your own, even in an incredibly repressive environment like Nazi Germany," Odom said.
Odom signed copies of the book Thursday afternoon at the Barnes & Nobles bookstore on the USM campus. Odom has been teaching at Southern Miss since 1974.
