Salvation Army bell ringers collecting donations in Pine Belt | News
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Holiday weekends are a busy time for shoppers, retailers and those who ring the red kettle bells to help the Salvation Army. The bell ringers are stationed at shopping centers, grocery stores and other locations in the Laurel-Hattiesburg area and are taking donations to assist the needy.
"I enjoy doing it, it gives me a peace of mind," said Vashun Hutton of Hattiesburg. He was a bell ringer at Corner Market on Hardy Street Saturday.
"Every year, around Christmas, you see people smiling and bells, I just wanted to be one of those people," said Darian Cooley, a student who volunteered to be a bell ringer at the Turtle Creek Mall on Black Friday.
"It just makes me feel good," said Dewanda Evans, another bell ringer at the Turtle Creek Mall.
The tradition of setting up the red kettles for the Salvation Army began in 1891 in San Francisco.
