Golden Eagle Tribal Society creates Medicine Wheel Garden | News

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Students at The University of Southern Mississippi created a place where anyone can get a lesson in history, medicine and culture all in one.

That place is the Medicine Wheel Garden located on the main campus of USM in Hattiesburg. In 2005, the Golden Eagles Inner Tribal Society started the garden.

President of the society, Danielle Isaac, says originally it was a Native Medicine Wheel, but with the help of the Mississippi Native Plant Society, the garden is full of native plants with several purposes including medicinal .

Isaac says bits of Native American History and beliefs are displayed throughout the garden. Isaac says the garden serves as an educational tool for many fields at the university, and primary schools in the Pine belt area.

"The native schools they even come here, bring their students and we show them the garden. I think it is important for the university to have this garden, because it's educational, also to share the Native American Culture," said Isaac.
