Hattiesburg residents take stand against crime | News

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Hattiesburg residents joined others across the nation in taking a stand against crime Tuesday night. Dozens of neighborhood parties were held as part of the 29th annual National Night Out Against Crime. 49 parties were scheduled across the city. The Target on Highway 98 hosted one of them. City officials there presented a proclamation to store management, thanking them for their national sponsorship of the event.

"It brings neighborhoods together It gives the neighbors an opportunity to fellowship in a social environment, with city and county officials, as well as law enforcement," said Maxine Coleman, Hattiesburg's Night Out Against Crime coordinator.   

In East Hattiesburg, many other folks gathered at places like the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3036 to show their support for law enforcement agencies. It was the first year for that V.F.W. post to host a Night Out party.

"We want to take a front row line in fighting against crime," said Ted Tibbett, commander of V.F.W. Post 3036. "We fought enemies around the world and now we're ready to take on whatever is happening in our good city," Tibbett said.

Among the special guests attending the V.F.W. party were Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny Dupree and 4th District Congressman Steven Palazzo.
