HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Some community-minded young people in Hattiesburg spent their Saturday trying to improve the lives of dozens of older or low-income Hub City residents. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity delivered several dozen new screen doors to residents in East Hattiesburg.
The doors were donated by Home Depot and they were delivered in a van furnished by Petro Motors.
Local resident Jarvis Johnson organized the delivery. He says he hopes it will inspire others to help their neighbors.
"Hopefully, the younger generation here in Hattiesburg will get more involved in the community," Johnson said.
"I love it," said Edward Evans, a resident of E. 7th Street who received one of the doors. "I didn't know they were coming, they surprised me," he said.
About 100 screen doors were given away.
