Hattiesburg Zoo celebrates 62nd birthday | News
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Hattiesburg tourism officials are celebrating the birthday of the city's historic zoo and at the same time, opening up a whole new part of the facility for families to enjoy. Visitors were invited to "Party Like an Animal" at the 62nd Birthday Bash for the zoo Saturday.
As part of the event, two new attractions were officially opened...a petting zoo and a mining sluice.
Also, the backside of the zoo's lake has been opened to the public, complete with two new pavilions.
"it's very unusual for a city of our size to even have a zoo," said Rick Taylor, executive director of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission. "And we see over the years and certainly this year, it's a big draw," Taylor said.
"It's a lot of fun to come to, bring the kids, it's something to do," said Sonya Woodard, who visited the zoo with her children. "They love riding the train and seeing all the different animals. I think it's great for the economy here in Hattiesburg," Woodard said.
I like it, I think the kids are enjoying it," said Denielle Mason, another visitor at the zoo. "I see a lot of the kids involved, playing and having a great time," Mason said.
Meanwhile, work on three important projects is continuing at the zoo. Officials hope to have the new tiger holding facility, the new zoo school and the new quarantine building open by the end of this year.
