USM celebrates 100th birthday of Hattiesburg Hall
News

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Students, faculty and administrators at Southern Miss gathered Thursday to wish a happy 100th birthday to Hattiesburg Hall, the oldest residence hall on campus.

It was built in 1912 for $111,000 and would cost over $7 million if it was constructed today.

Over the years, more than 20,000 students have lived there.

Thursday's celebration included the unveiling of an original plaque from the building.

"Of course, it bears the name of the host city for the college, so we felt it was important to celebrate this being the oldest hall," said Scott Blackwell, director of housing for Southern Miss.

About 110 male students live in Hattiesburg Hall today but in 1912, the building was used as a women's dormitory.
