First four Chinese exchange students graduate from WCU

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Hundreds of students have received degrees from William Carey University during commencement ceremonies this weekend. Among them are four from China, who are the first to graduate as part of a recently-established exchange program.

The students are from the city of Linyi. 

Saturday afternoon, business student Luna Liu received her bachelor of science degree in a 1 o'clock ceremony. Dozens of other students in the fields of business, education, missions, Biblical studies and music also got degrees.

McDaniel: Taxpayers have good reason to mistrust central government

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- State Senator Chris McDaniel, who's been an outspoken critic of Obamacare, is reacting to the ongoing IRS scandal. He says an IRS official who once oversaw a unit which targeted Tea Party groups has no business now heading up the IRS office which will be responsible for Obamacare.

Sarah Hall Ingram, who served as commissioner of the office responsible for tax-exempt groups from 2009 to 2012 is now the director of the IRS' Affordable Care Act office.

Camp Shelby to host annual "Laying of the Wreaths"

Camp Shelby will host the annual, "Laying of the Wreaths" on Thursday, May 23, at 10 a.m.

CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM)- The soldiers and civilians at Camp Shelby are preparing for an annual Memorial Day service honoring America's fallen heros. Next Thursday at 10 a.m., the post will host the annual Laying of the Wreaths ceremony.

As part of the event, wreaths will be laid at all of the monuments on the grounds of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum.

The monuments represent soldiers which have trained at Camp Shelby since it first opened in 1917.

Hattiesburg High student to attend Naval Academy

Hattiesburg High School senior Parker Krag has been appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- A Hattiesburg High School senior will soon be on his way to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Parker Krag has received an appointment to the academy. He got his acceptance packet Friday morning. Krag is one of the first students in Mississippi this year to receive an appointment. About a half dozen other seniors across the state will also be getting appointments.

Red Cross hosts first Stars and Stripes Salute

A silent auction was part of the first Stars and Stripes: Salute to the Military Friday night.

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The South Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted an inaugural fund-raising event Friday night which honored several Hattiesburg-area military retirees. The first Stars and Stripes: Salute to the Military at Southern Miss' Thad Cochran Center was held in conjunction with U.S. Armed Services Week.

Honorees included Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Steve Parham, Specialist Fifth Class (Ret.) Ted Tibbett and Private First Class (Ret.) Clarence Magee.

Twenty-three pre-school age graduate from Children's Center

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Twenty-three pre-school age children at the Children's Center for Communication and Development walked the stage Friday to receive their diplomas.

Since 1974 the center has led Mississippi in early intervention services for pre-school age children with significant disabilities. Their program provides the necessary skills in language, cognitive and physical development, and emotional growth to prepare them to move to the next stage of their education.

The center currently serves 90 families from as many as 22 South Mississippi counties.
