Southern Miss School of Social Work sponsors annual Colloquium

The School of Social Work at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted its annual Social Work Colloquium on Nov. 16 in the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus. This year’s event titled, “New Directions in Trauma Treatment: Implications for Social Work Policy and Practice,” featured a number of regionally and nationally-known speakers.

More than 200 students, faculty, staff and community members heard presentations from Dr. Ray Scurfield, professor emeritus and nationally known researcher for post-traumatic stress disorder; Nick Rutledge, trauma educator and clinical instructor in the School of Social Work, Dr. Sheila Robinett, military sexual trauma psychologist and MST coordinator for the VA Gulf Coast Veterans Care Systems; Elliott Hill, program director for the Mississippi Integrated Health Disaster Program in the School of Social Work, and Fran Baker, expert in secondary trauma.

Topics for the colloquium featured all aspects of trauma treatment, ranging from neurobiological analysis of brain development to the effects of sexual trauma and trauma among children.
