Lest We Forget Tour - The Immortal Mississippi | Arts & Culture
Title (Max 100 Characters)
The following is a press release from the Hattiesburg Area Historical Society:
The Immortal Mississippi book tour with Mississippi Gulf Coast native, Ron Skellie, will stop in Hattiesburg, Jan. 8, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center, 723 Main St.
The story of the unit is told through letters, diaries and family histories as they fought in the Army of Tennessee from Shiloh to the Carolinas, part of the “Mississippi High Pressure Brigade.” The book is the result of the author’s 12-year research. Told chronologically from the time of their muster as independent companies from South Mississippi in the 7th Mississippi Volunteers, their training in camps at Pass Christian, Shieldsboro and Ocean Springs; the history traces their enlistment for the war in the fall of 1861 as the 7th Regiment Mississippi Infantry until their surrender in North Carolina in 1865.
The unit included volunteers from Amite, Covington, Franklin, Holmes, Lawrence, Marion (including current Lamar), Perry (including current Forrest), Pike, and Yalobusha counties.
Please bring your ancestor’s artifacts, letters, diaries, pictures, etc. to share; Skellie plans to add to his collection for a final, hard-back volume. The author will sign copies of his paperback book, which will be available for purchase.
All are welcome to this free program presented by the Hattiesburg Area Historical Society and the South Mississippi Genealogical & Historical Society. Details at http://7miss.org/ or contact Kathy Goss, gosskathleen@gmail.com or 601-544-5210.
