Hub City Poker Run to benefit Hattiesburg Domestic Abuse Shelter

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The Hattiesburg Board of Realtors is gearing up for their second annual Domestic Abuse Family Shelter Poker Run.

The poker run will take place Saturday, June, 15, and all proceeds will go to help the shelter build a new, larger facility for its residents.

Southern Miss Communications Team Wins Several Awards at Annual Conference

The Office of Communications at The University of Southern Mississippi captured 11 awards – including a Grand Award for Print Media -- during the 2013 College Public Relations Association of Mississippi Conference held May 20-21 in Gulfport, Miss.

Competing in the Senior Division among Mississippi universities, Southern Miss took home the Grand Award for its “Parent Handbook.” The judges called the submission a “Home run.”

The American Cancer Society will mark its 100th birthday on May 22, 2013. The Society is the nation’s largest voluntary healthcare non-profit organization and the country’s largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.8 billion. Nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will have the chance to celebrate a birthday this year thanks in part to the Society’s efforts.

Hattiesburg residents speak out on immigration bill

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The Senate Judiciary Committee approved an immigration bill on Tuesday that would create a pathway to citizenship for 11.5 million immigrants who are living illegally in the United States.

“We are truthfully happy,” said Jesus Martinez. “It's an opportunity for many of those who have been here for several years and haven't been able to fix their papers."
