Mother of student killed in car crash gives award in her honor

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The mother of an 8th grader at Presbyterian Christian School who was killed in a car wreck four years ago was at that school Wednesday presenting an annual award in honor of her daughter. Leslie McGill gave the Marissa McGill Christian Character Award to student Preston Bell during a Senior Awards Program.

Marissa, who attended PCS for four years, was killed in May 2008. After her death, her parents helped establish two orphanages in Africa that bear her name.

HPD arrests of for homelessness shoot up

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Population under siege might be dramatic - with an estimated 700 and some homeless people living in the Hattiesburg area, there were only 54 arrests for vagrancy in 2011. However that number is spiking in the first half of 2012 and, right now, is on track to total over 100 by years end.

When asked if the Hattiesburg Police Department is cracking down, Public Information Officer Lieutenant Eric Proulx says: "Not true, we have sympathy to their situation, we have a job to do though."

City holds memorial service for fallen HPD officers

Hattiesburg (WDAM) - To the sound of taps and gunshots, four fallen Hattiesburg Police officers were memorialized.  Onlookers watched in somber silence as the flag flew at half-mass.  One of them was the wife of Sergeant David Anthony, who was shot and killed while responding to an alarm call.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Southern Arena Theatre (SAT) will celebrate its 36th season with two exciting plays performing in repertory June 21 – July 15 in the Gilbert F. Hartwig and Martha R. Tatum Theatres on the Hattiesburg campus.

The 13th of Parisis a delightful and poignant romantic comedy from one of America’s up-and-coming playwrights. First commissioned by South Coast Repertory, The 13th of Parispremiered at City Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pa., and has received productions in regional theatres throughout the country.

Pine Grove offers new addiction service for seniors

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction facility in Hattiesburg unveiled a new addiction recovery program Wednesday morning.

The program is called Legacy and it's designed to help older adults, 60 and older, deal with their substance abuse issues. It will operate out of a newly refurbished area of their facility on Broadway Drive.

Legacy is a 60-day residential program. The facility can treat 24-patients at a time The treatment is based on a 12-step model.
